Novelty Yarn - Choking Hazard - Not for use with children

I want to address a question that was just asked about novelty yarn and baby blankets on my Facebook page. The person asked if it would be a choking hazard.  Yes it is a choking hazard!

Novelty yarn should not be used anywhere near a baby or toddler in any type of crochet item. Think about the result from fibers and invisible particles building up in the air passages of a newborn baby! In fact, novelty yarn should have a warning label, "Not for use in items intended for age 13 and below". I am not saying not to use it but use it responsibly on adult items.

  2. is Bernat's Baby Boucle considered a novelty yarn? Or is it the pompon type yarns. I guess i'm not sure when a yarn becomes a 'novelty' yarn. So i'm asking out of an abundance of caution.

  3. Icebear,
pom pom yarn is novelty and will come apart easily. Little hands can grab a hold of it easily. You may have to look closely at the other yarn to see if there are loose fibers that come out easy.

  4. Novely yarn like eyelash yarn, pom pom yarn or the yarns that have fibers hanging by a thread. The fibers come out easy.

  6. I totally agree with you, I wouldn't even use the fluffy type yarns, either, because it could be breathed in and cause respiratory (sp?) problems or even choking.
In the end, I think just a smooth type yarn is the best for babies and children, less fuss and less worries!

  7. Excellent post! Too often I see toys marketed for little ones with the worse kind of shedding fibers all over it.

When in doubt, do a "pluck test", I say. If you can pluck fluff and stuff off the item, it's not safe!

  9. Never thought about this before - good point! I think there should be a warning on the packets.
